from Club Zum
ZUM has carefully selected staff that is unsurpassed in its expertise and enthusiasm for quality. What is taught at ZUM ranges from the fundamental to the experimental and from the competitive to the serene. Instruction is customized to all fitness levels, and is sustainable throughout a lifetime.ZUM members share a variety of backgrounds. Some are fitness novices previously uninterested in joining health clubs. Others have experience in clubs and understand the limitations of what is available in the marketplace. Still others are high-level athletes who understand that Peter Shmock's experience, leadership and vision will help them attain even greater accomplishments. A membership at ZUM offers more sophisticated, personal service.
Whatever their backgrounds, ZUM members prefer to step out of the fitness mainstream. Each prefers a health club experience that is more personal, more substantive, more holistic and more fun -- in essence, more real.
Ultimately, members share a common interest: the desire for balance and vitality. ZUM supports this by offering unrivaled expertise and innovation in an atmosphere of verve and style. And that's what ZUM is about. As its name implies, ZUM is part zen, part play, and part speed -- the speed at which progress is possible with focus, forward thinking and expert guidance. At ZUM, you move up, on and beyond.

In March/April 2007, when I was looking for a gym to join and a trainer to start with, I evaluated most of the gyms in the downtown area. I talked to fitness directors, met with trainers, toured facilities, and did sample workouts.
I found Club Zum (pronounced "zoom", I think) to be the clear, standout winner. The staff was intelligent, articulate, and knowledgeable. They paid careful attention to my stated goals and encouraged me to tell them anything relevant about my background before I started. When I first met with a trainer, Molly, she spent a lot of time having me do simple movements such as lunges and looking at my form, watching me for several reps to see how I moved and then giving me pointers on how to improve. Whenever I have problems with an exercise, she can usually solve it by helping me correct my form.
The entire staff is friendly and never condescending or intimidating; there's none of the musclehead mentality here. The hours are pretty convenient; open until 10:30 on weekdays and 7 or 8 on weekends. The one thing I would like to see is more thorough, consistent, quantitative measurement for goal-setting and tracking.
It's more expensive than most clubs in the area, but worth it in my opinion (and there are low-end options with restricted hours and no training).
